January 27, 2010, 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., MC 310.
Notes:
Present: Tom Hergert, Fred Hill, Debra Kellerman, Mumbi Mwangi, Tracy Ore, Dan Wildeson, Lalita Subrahmanyan, Luz Triana-Echeverria.

2. Updates
a. Debriefing with Nadinne Cruz – Cruz felt that the time was ripe and the stars were well aligned at SCSU to take Community Engagement to a new level. She recommended moving toward formalizing CE and making it an integral part of the identity, mission of the University as well as having frank and open conversations around conflicting, and diverse political ideologies.
b. New and non-tenured faculty luncheon: 60 people attended, 50 surveys have been analyzed, 24 faculty members are interested in being facilitators of Faculty Learning Communities, a total of 46 faculty are interested in participating and leading FLCs. Follow up meetings are being planned for February 5th and 19th with leaders and participants.
c. Will Allen (Tracy Ore): Will Allen is available only in August or next Spring. Lalita Subrahmanyan will take concerns about funding his visit to the Provost. Tracy Ore will approach a community partner who has funding for a community garden on the South side for co-sponsorship.
d. FLC Institute: Three faculty involved in above initiative along with Lalita Subrahmanyan will attend an FLC Institute : 11th Annual Faculty Learning Community Developers’ and Facilitators’ Summer Institute - June 23-26, 2010 at the Kellogg West Ranch at California Polytechnic State University, Pomona, (Southern) California.
e. Upcoming book talks: In Praise of Slowness, Fred Hill, Wednesday, March 3, 1:00 to 2:00; We Will Have Gained Ourselves, By Mumbi Mwangi, Wednesday, March 24, 2010, 1:00 - 2:00 pm.
f. Book talk on Nadinne Cruz’s book: Service Learning: A Movement’s Pioneers reflect on Its origins, Practice, and Future. Co-authored with Timothy Stanton, and Dwight Giles.
g. Other activities: Collaborations with Sponsored Programs, revival of Chairs Wisdom Collaborative, visit to DACs, etc.
3. Discussion on CETL participation in Celebration of Scholarship and setting aside one day for discussions about and recognition of faculty scholarship.
a. Lalita Subrahmanyan will request Jodi Kuznia to work with International Studies on setting up a session during that on Fulbright faculty or at another time to showcase faculty members who have participated in study abroad or other international programs.
b. Actions: Motion: CETL recommends the designation of one day in Spring semester as the Provost’s Colloquium day, as part of the Celebration of Scholarship, to identify and explore scholarship and creative activity. Moved by Dan Wildeson, 2nd Tracy Ore, passed by consensus. Fred Hill will send the motion with a list of thinking points.
4. Discussion regarding future of CETL: Subrahmanyan will request the Provost to grant the CETL Advisory Committee compensation for 4 hours one evening to develop the future vision, mission, goals, etc. for CETL based upon the start up ideas provided by Lalita Subrahmanyan.
