Division of General Studies (DGS) Advisory Committee Minutes
The primary responsibility of the committee is to serve as an advisory body to the Director of the Division of General Studies and to the administration concerning DGS policy, the program itself, and the curriculum.
2/9/10
Atwood Columbine Room
Members present: Deborah Biorn, Wayne Braith, Gretchen Huwe, Adam Klepetar, Steve Klepetar, Geoffrey Tabakin, and Victoria Williams
Members absent: Maria Grundman, Pat Hauslein, Mary Kavanagh, Joanna Pucel, Robert Reff, and Holly Schuck.
1. Adam Kelpetar made the following motion: DGS students should be held to the same probation standard as the rest of the university. The motion was seconded and passed.
2. Adam said that Admissions has told him there are 697 DGS students admitted for Fall 2010. A policy just implemented for this coming fall’s new admits allows DGS students to be admitted to the university without returning a contract first. He doesn’t know what that means for yield.
a. There was discussion about the ability of the program to support a large number of students.
i. Will there be funding for graduate assistants to help support students?
ii. Will there be faculty/adjuncts available to teach enough sections of 110 and 150?
iii. Available resources can only support the nearly 500 students the program had this year.
b. The committee recommended that the DGS Administrators send an email to Dean Olagunju, copied to the Provost, addressing concerns about the numbers of DGS students admitted for Fall. Resources must match the number of students.
3. There was a brief discussion concerning who should be hired to teach COLL 150. People hired must have a commitment to teaching first-year students.
4. Adam announced that DGS students are working on a benefit for Haiti. They will be selling t-shirts.
5. The meeting was adjourned at 1:10 PM. The next meeting will be Tuesday, February 23, in the Atwood Columbine Room.
Respectfully submitted,
Victoria Williams for Holly Schuck, Secretary
