OLD BUSINESS

Hoff moved, Cook seconded a motion to remove from the table for approval the SC proposal for the new SCSU Undergraduate General Education program. A number of points had been raised in the departments since our last meeting. In particular:

·         AVIT: The goal areas do not adequately address issues that arise in such areas as nursing, aviation, and technology.

·         MME: Approved the proposal in the department, but expressed reservations about the lack of technology in the proposal. Also, they are concerned that any GenEd curriculum (1) not increase the overall credits in any engineering program; and (2) not decrease the engineering credits in those programs.

·         ECE: Concerns about the lack of technology and about the relative sizes of engineering and other courses in their programs, as well as about how “experience” will be operationally defined.

·         CNA: The proposal does not mention technology, not even computing.

·         CSCI: In spite of the ubiquity of computing in modern education and society, the proposal does not require any familiarity with this technology.

In its last department meeting, CSCI passed the following new language for Goal Area 11. It modifies the existing description of the Goal Area and adds two new Learning Outcomes (numbers 5 and 6).

GOAL AREA 11: To locate, evaluate, process, and present information using computers and related technologies, and to examine the interaction of information technologies with society.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Identify and analyze an information need effectively and efficiently.

  2. Access information using an effective search strategy and appropriate resources.

  3. Critically evaluate information and its sources in order to determine information  reliability and accuracy, and discern its point of view, bias, and authority.

  4. Access and use information ethically and legally.

  5. Use computers to analyze and present information.

  6. Examine the effects of computing and information technologies on societies.

Ghosh moved, Petzold seconded a motion that the COSE Curriculum Committee approve this language for Goal Area 11, and to require that five of the resulting six Learning Outcomes be satisfied. Motion passed, vote 8-0-0.

The original motion to approve the GenEd proposal now passed, vote 8-0-0. The Committee would like to see the program amended to modify Goal Area 11 with the above language.

The next item of business was the following proposals from MME:

·         PC: Replace electives MME 402 and 403 with MME 404 and 405.

·         PC: Remove PESS 122 (1 credit) as a requirement for the MfgE BS.

·         PC: Remove PESS 122 (1 credit) as a requirement for the ME BS.

·         SC: Change admission requirements for MME majors and change bulletin description.

·         RE: Drop MME 402/502 (Indoor Thermal Engineering)

·         RE: Drop MME 403/503 (Design of Thermal Systems)

·         NC: MME 404/504 (Introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics)

·         NC: MME 405/505 (Energy Systems Design and Analysis)

There was some confusion about sign-offs (which have in fact been obtained) and which proposals should be addressed together. Bekkala moved, Petzold seconded a motion to table these proposals until out next meeting. Motion passed, vote 8-0-0.

Meeting adjourned at 10:50am.
